2008 OPEN SHORT STORY COMPETITION

FOR AN ORIGINAL STORY NOT EXCEEDING 1500 WORDS
ON THE THEME OF ‘A FRESH PAGE’
SENIOR JUDGE: GREG MOSSE, a writer, translator and creative writing teacher, also co-director of the Chichester Writing Festival. Author of ‘Secrets of the Labyrinth’.
Write a story on the theme of ‘A Fresh Page’ of no more than 1500 words for a chance to win a cash prize.

The winners will be invited to the GRAND OPENING AND PRIZE GIVING CEREMONY at Havant Arts Centre on Thursday, September 25th 2008, at 6.00 pm, for the presentation of the prizes.
The winner and runner-up will be notified by September 10th 2008.

COMPETITION RULES
1. The competition is only open to residents of Hampshire and West Sussex. All entries must be the original work of the entrant and must not have been previously published, broadcast on radio or TV, or awarded a prize in a competition.
2. Manuscripts must be in English and typed on one side only of A4 paper, double-spaced.
3. Manuscripts must not bear the name of the author or have any other form of identification, with the exception of the story title, page numbers and word count. The author’s name must only appear on the Entry Form. Submissions bearing identification of any kind will be disqualified and entry fees will not be returned. Entries will be coded for the judging.
4. Any number of entries may be submitted provided the relevant fees are enclosed, but no competitor may win more than one prize. The Entry Form may be photocopied.
5. Manuscripts will not be returned and competitors are advised to keep a copy of their work. All reasonable care will be taken, but the Havant Literary Festival and Havant & District Writers’ Circle accepts no responsibility for the loss or damage to manuscripts.
6. Submissions will not be acknowledged unless a suitably worded, stamped addressed postcard is included with the entry.
7. The Judges’ decisions are final. No correspondence will be entered into.
8. Copyright of material remains with the author but Havant Literary Festival reserve the right to use entries at Festival events and for publicity use.
9. Trustees of the Havant Literary Festival and members of the Havant & District Writers’ Circle assessment panel are not eligible to enter.
10. The winner and runner-up will be notified by September 10th 2008. The awards will take place at the Grand Opening and Prize Giving Ceremony at Havant Arts Centre on Thursday, September 25th 2008. Results will be made available to the local press and will be available on the Havant & District Writers’ Circle, and Havant Literary Festival websites. Competitors wanting a copy of the results should enclose a stamped addressed envelope marked RESULTS with their entry.
11. In the event of the festival being cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances, all monies will be refunded in full.
